Information on the governing bodies and committees
The organizational structure of the University of Cologne is defined by law and the University’s constitution.
The University’s central governing bodies are the Rectorate, the University Council and the Senate. The Rectorate is responsible for the governance of the university. It currently comprises the Rector, six Vice-rectors and the Chancellor, the Rector chairing the Rectorate and representing the University externally. The University Council advises the Rectorate and exercises supervisory control over the Rectorate’s management of the University. The Senate is responsible for those aspects of research, teaching and studies that pertain to the University of Cologne or its central institutions, or are of crucial importance. Together with the members of the University Council, its members form the University Elective assembly that elects the members of the Rectorate. The work of Rectorate, University Council and Senate is supported by a series of further committees and bodies, like the Academic Advisory Board that advises the Rectorate and the Faculties in all important scientific matters.
