Erasmus in Cologne

We are delighted that you are interested in spending a semester/year abroad at the University of Cologne in the framework of the Erasmus+ programme.

When you have been chosen for an Erasmus study place at the University of Cologne by your home university, your Erasmus coordinator or the International Office of your home university first needs to send an official nomination to the University of Cologne (to the Erasmus coordinator at the receiving faculty as well as to the International Office).

After we received the nomination from your home university, we will send you an info email in June (for the winter semester/whole academic year) or November (for the summer semester). It includes an invitation to sign up for our online portal “UKI” (Uni Köln International) that guides you thorugh the application process and assists you in preparing for your studies at the University of Cologne.

Once you signed up for “UKI”, please register officially through our online application portal KLIPS 2.0.

We kindly ask you not to apply unless you carefully read the application instructions in “UKI”!

The application periods are:

  • Winter semester /whole academic year: mid-June to July 15th
  • Summer semester: mid-December to January 15th

Please fill in the online application during the indicated period and send us the required documents, that you have to download in KLIPS 2.0 (Application for Admission and Student Regsiration Form) by email to Annika Schwarz (

Please do not forget to have the Student Registration Form signed and stamped by your university.

PLEASE NOTE: Students of Medicine coming from Erasmus partner universities have to send their Student Registration Form directly to the Centre of International Relations of the Faculty of Medicine. Moreover, they have to send in some additional documents which can be found under:

Letters of Admission

You can track the status of your application in your applicant account on KLIPS 2.0. As soon as your application has been processed, you will receive an automatic email and can download the Letter of Admission in KLIPS 2.0.

Proof of Health Insurance

You are required to submit a proof of health insurance, even if you study at our university for only one or two semesters. You have to provide either proof of a health insurance from a German health care provider or a “Befreiungsbescheinigung” (Certificate of Exemption), issued by a public health insurance company (gesetzliche Krankenkasse) in Germany. You cannot be enrolled with a proof of health insurance! Detailed information on this is included in “UKI”.

German as a Foreign Language:

Detailed information on German Language Courses will be given to you by the International Office once we received the official nomination from your home university.

If you would like to stay in one of the University’s student dormitories you can apply for a room at the “Studentenwerk” of Cologne. To apply, please visit the website at and go to “Wohnen" -> “Online-Bewerbung”.

Application deadlines are also July 15 and January 15.  However, we advise you to send the application before that deadline!

For further information on different courses and course registration, please contact your Departmental Erasmus Coordinator at the receiving faculty. If you don´t know the name of your Erasmus coordinator, please check the list "coordinators".
