The offers of the Albertus Magnus Center provide skills for the successful completion of the doctorate and prepare for a variety of career options within and outside academia. Numerous interdisciplinary training courses as well as networking and information events are available for this purpose. These are free of charge and open to all doctoral candidates at the University of Cologne.
In addition to the events listed here specifically for doctoral students, you will find many other offers in the Further Education Program of the University of Cologne in which you can participate.

Dieser digitale fachübergreifende Intensivworkshop richtet sich an alle Student*innen und Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter*innen, die sich zukünftig einer Promotion stellen möchten bzw. sich in der Entscheidungsphase dazu befinden.
Wichtig: Eine Promotion sollte schon jetzt eine klare Option im Rahmen Ihrer Karriere darstellen. Im Intensivworkshop reflektieren Sie dann Fragen wie z.B. "Will ich wirklich promovieren?" und "Wie kann ich dieses große Projekt angehen und durchhalten?"
Das eintägige Seminar wird Ihnen helfen, Ihre persönliche Einstellung zum Dissertationsvorhaben zu klären sowie Aussagen zur Umsetzbarkeit des Promotion sprojekts zu treffen. Sie erarbeiten sich somit eine fundierte Entscheidungsbasis für oder gegen eine Dissertation. Die Seminarteilnahme ist grundsätzlich frühestens ab dem 3. Semester Master vorgesehen.

Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM/RDM): Eine praxisbezogene Einführung

FDM, FAIR, PID, TSM, LZA, DMP – im Zusammenhang mit Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM) begegnen Ihnen zahlreiche Akronyme, die den Zugang zu diesem wichtigen Aspekt der Guten Wissenschaftlichen Praxis (GWP) erschweren. Hinter dem Begriff FDM verbergen sich Methoden, Tools und Services, um Ihre Forschungsergebnisse reproduzierbar zu machen und Ihre wertvollen digitalen Daten sicher und gut dokumentiert aufzubewahren. Um während des gesamten Forschungsprozesses einen Überblick über Ihre Forschungsdaten zu behalten, sie besser kollaborativ bearbeiten, publizierte Daten nachnutzen oder Daten Dritten zur Verfügung stellen zu können, machen wir Sie in dieser Einführung mit den Inhalten hinter den genannten Akronymen vertraut.
In dem Workshop erhalten Sie eine praxisorientierte, disziplinübergreifende Einführung in die Grundlagen des FDM. Ziel ist, dass Sie anhand Ihres aktuellen Forschungsvorhabens lernen, ihr FDM aktiv zu planen und zu dokumentieren. Sie erhalten außerdem einen Überblick über die Unterstützungsangebote des C3RDM.
Es sind keine Vorkenntnisse nötig. Dieser Workshops ist eine Möglichkeit die Zugangsvoraussetzung zu Aufbaukursen des C³RDM (wie unserem DMP-Kurs) abzudecken.

Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM/RDM): Wie schreibe ich einen Datenmanagementplan (DMP)?
Content
Spätestens seit nachhaltiges Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM) im Sinne der „FAIR-Prinzipien“ im Kodex zur Guten Wissenschaftlichen Praxis (GWP) der DFG sowie in Stellungnahmen einiger Fachgesellschaften fest verankert ist, sind Begriffe wie „Datenmanagement Plan (DMP)“, „Nachnutzungspotential“ und „Publikation in einschlägigen Repositorien“ immer häufiger zu lesen, besonders im Zusammenhang mit den formalen Anforderungen der Forschungsförderung.
Um weiterhin erfolgreich Drittmittel einwerben und während des gesamten Forschungsprozesses einen Überblick über Ihre digitalen Daten behalten zu können, machen wir Sie in diesem Workshop Schritt für Schritt mit den genannten Anforderungen vertraut. Wir stellen Ihnen außerdem geeignete Templates, Tools und Services vor.
In dem Workshop lernen Sie Nutzen und Bestandteile von Datenmanagementplänen kennen. Ziel ist, dass Sie Ihren individuellen Handlungsbedarf erkennen und lernen, FDM in aktuellen und zukünftigen Forschungsvorhaben aktiv zu planen und zu dokumentieren. Abgerundet wird das Programm von einem Überblick über die Unterstützungsangebote des C3RDM, insbesondere in Bezug auf die Antrags- und DMP-Beratung.
Grundkenntnisse im FDM werden vorausgesetzt. Diese können beispielsweise durch den Besuch des „Workshop Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM/RDM): Eine praxisbezogene Einführung“ oder unser E-Learning erworben werden.

Good Scientific Practice – Basic principles for Doctoral Candidates
Content
The major objective of the workshop “Good Scientific Practice” is to know and understand the basic rules and values of the responsible conduct of research in all its steps, according to local, national and international regulations and guidelines.
You will explore the differences and grey areas between good scientific practice, questionable research practice and scientific misconduct. You will learn how misconduct can be recognized and prevented and how it should be addressed and dealt with in case it occurs, and what damage it can cause if handled improperly.
In addition, you will learn to develop appropriate solutions to difficult situations in the process of science and receive advice on how to protect your own scientific work. You are encouraged to speak with your colleagues and institutions about problems and challenges.
The content of the workshop follows the curriculum “Good Scientific Practice” which was commissioned by and developed in cooperation with the German Research Ombudsman, an independent board of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Was ist gute wissenschaftliche Praxis? Was sind die grundlegenden Werte und Regeln der Wissenschaft? Wie erkenne ich Fehlverhalten im Alltag der Wissenschaft? Welche Konsequenzen hat wissenschaftliches Fehlverhalten?
Diese Fragen werden im Workshop „Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis“ geklärt. Sie analysieren und reflektieren Problemfelder und Grauzonen von wissenschaftlichem Fehlverhalten. Der Workshop bietet Ihnen die Gelegenheit, Lösungsstrategien für schwierige Situationen im Wissenschaftsprozess zu entwickeln und bietet Raum für Austausch über Herausforderungen und Konfliktfelder im Forschungsalltag.
Die Inhalte des Kurses entstammen dem Curriculum für Lehrveranstaltungen zur "Guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis", das im Auftrag und in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ombudsman für die Wissenschaft, einem unabhängigen Gremium der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), entwickelt wurde.

Research Data Management (RDM/FDM): A practice-oriented introduction
Content
RDM, FAIR, PID, TSM, DMP – being confronted with many acronyms in the context of research data management (RDM) makes it difficult to become familiar with this important aspect of good research practice. The concept of RDM includes a whole range of methods, tools, and services to make your research results reproducible and keep valuable digital data safe and well documented. In order to keep an overview of your research data throughout the research process, to be able to work on it collaboratively, to re-use published data, or to make your own available to third parties, we will familiarise you step by step with the meaning of the acronyms mentioned above.
In this workshop you will receive a practice-oriented, cross-disciplinary introduction to the basics of RDM. Afterwards you will know how to actively plan and document your RDM during research projects. The programme is completed by an overview of C³RDM's support services for all phases of the research data lifecycle.
No prerequisites necessary. This workshop will provide you with the requirements to participate in advanced C³RDM workshops like our DMP course.

Research Data Management (RDM/FDM): How to write a data management plan (DMP)
Content
Sustainable research data management (RDM) in terms of the "FAIR principles" has been firmly anchored in the Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice (GWP) of the DFG as well as in subject-specific recommendations. Since then, terms such as "data management plan (DMP)", "reuse potential" and "publication in trusted repositories" have become common key phrases in the formal requirements of national and international funding schemes.
For the successful acquisition of third-party funding as well as for keeping track of your digital data throughout the entire research process, we will familiarize you step by step with the above-mentioned requirements in this workshop. We will also introduce you to suitable templates, tools and services.
During the workshop, you will learn about the benefits and components of data management plans. The goal is for you to identify your individual need for action and learn how to actively plan and document RDM in current and future research projects. The program will be completed with an overview of the support services offered by C³RDM, especially regarding advice on devising grant proposals and DMPs.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of FDM is required. This can be acquired, for example, by attending the “Workshop Research Data Management (RDM/FDM): A Practice-Oriented Introduction” or working through our e-learning.

Content
Holding presentations is one of the skills that are frequently required of researchers in their professional life. Effective (self)presenting in the way of showing your strength and knowledge confidently and authentically at the right moment is an art – and a professional competence that can be learned. Whether you are at conferences, in front of an academic committee, making a presentation or promoting a research project: the way you think about yourself and how you come across to others will deeply influence your success.
In this workshop, you will learn about essential speech communication techniques and get the opportunity to practice speeches. Furthermore, it provides insights into the use of positive language and the practise of successful self-expression. After an overview of classical rhetoric, speech structure and feedback culture you will be able to practice and improve your presence and personal performance in an academic setting. A good presentation begins with good preparation. You will work on exercises that help you understand the best techniques in developing the right presentation by answering questions like: Who will be present? Where will I give my talk? How can I most effectively present my research material?
Body language is an aspect that is covered in any presentation workshop but under these special circumstances, we will cover effectively and efficiently using an online platform to give top-notch presentations. Your voices will play a particularly critical role here. Hence, in advance you will be asked to prepare a presentation of a maximum of five slides about your current research for a non-expert scientific audience.

What would you tell lay persons, media representatives or politicians about your work? Which kind of communication is best for your own issues? And how can you elaborate your own communication profile? This module introduces to the basics of (good) science communication.

Der soziale Hintergrund spielt im deutschen Hochschulsystem eine wichtige Rolle und hat auch einen Einfluss auf die Entscheidung für oder gegen eine Promotion. Familiäre Erwartungen und die persönliche Sozialisation prägen unsere Entscheidungen und haben damit ebenfalls Einfluss auf unsere Promotion. Häufig sind uns diese Zusammenhänge jedoch gar nicht präsent, sondern wirken vielmehr versteckt und unbewusst. Gemeinsam soll in diesem Workshop darüber reflektiert werden – sowohl im positiven Sinne als auch vielleicht als Stolperstein. Insbesondere Doktorand*innen, die ihre eigene Herkunft als Belastung empfinden, sollen Strategien mitgegeben werden, um positive Aspekte in den Vordergrund zu rücken.

Leadership Starter Kit
Content
As young scientists, you often take on first leadership tasks after graduating with a PhD or already supervise students and/or non-academic staff during your doctoral phase. In order to successfully manage initial leadership situations and at the same time advance your own doctorate, solid knowledge of central leadership instruments and practical experience are helpful to fulfil the tasks and to shape your new role.
The workshop "Leadership Starter Kit" will support you in mastering these first leadership steps. You will learn and experience in which areas your own leadership skills are already developed, and you will deepen your skills and knowledge in areas in which you have little or no experience.
The techniques introduced in this workshop can be used in a variety of contexts ranging from leading a team on a day-to-day basis to enhancing the team’s long-term productivity. Particular emphasis is placed upon enabling prospective leaders to become aware of key dynamics within a team and to adjust leadership strategies accordingly.

Assertiveness training for female researchers
Content
A strong impact, presence, individual expression, looking good, being calm, collected and composed, but also: Defining your borders, calmly retorting to verbal attacks, showing a fighting spirit, reacting spontaneously, being courageous and trusting yourself… this and much more is what we will be training in this workshop. We will practise direct communication and self-presentation as much as assertiveness, mindfulness and meditation. After a lot of practice, movement, fun and experimenting it becomes clear: All of these go together to create convincing self-expression and to support and encourage you when you are under pressure in your personal and professional life.

"Healthy Hour" 2024: new lectures with practical elements on health in the workplace
The "Healthy Hour" will once again be offered monthly in 2024, alternating between the prevention trainer and the psychologist from the UoC's occupational health service. The successful format is characterised by an appealing mix of knowledge transfer and practical elements and is dedicated to health-related topics around the workplace. It addresses both the symptoms of the physical strain of a desk job and the psychosocial aspects of self-care and collegial interaction.
The offer is open for all employees and can be attended during working hours. It takes place in German.
Stress-resilience as a Career Skill

Academic tasks and administration, tutoring and teaching, partner projects… and family first of all! You can feel the stress building up even while reading this. Being asked to do everything at once and straight away is an integral part of daily life in academia. In this challenging context stress-resilience is essential to keep a healthy balance and to deal successfully with the multitude of roles and demands.
This workshop offers you the welcome opportunity to calmly reflect about the main sources of pressure and strain that you encounter and to identify strategies to deal with them. You learn about triggers and consequences of stress and how your personal resilience can be strengthened. The central goal is that you get concrete impulses and tools that support you in keeping a good balance between productivity and self-care.

Weniger Stress in Studium und Promotion durch mehr Selbstmanagement (für Frauen)
Content
Ziel dieses Seminars ist es, Sie mit Blick auf stressige Situationen im Arbeitsalltag Ihres Studiums oder in der Promotionszeit zu stärken und einen gesunden Umgang mit Stress zu fördern. Dabei kann Stress sowohl durch Zeitdruck als auch durch das Gefühl, im Studium und vor allem in der Promotion nicht oder nur schleppend voranzukommen, ausgelöst werden. Gerade hier ist es nicht immer leicht, konstant stressfrei und motiviert dem Alltag zu begegnen. Aber müssen Sie das überhaupt? Nein, denn der erste und häufig auch wichtigste Schritt ist, achtsam mit sich selbst, den eigenen Emotionen und Ressourcen umzugehen. Dazu zählt auch, sich weniger verurteilend zu bewerten.
Der Umgang mit Stress ist immer ein individueller. Deshalb lernen Sie im Seminar verschiedene Ansatzpunkte des Stressmanagements und der Resilienz-Stärkung kennen und reflektieren, wie Sie Ihren persönlichen Stresssituationen im beruflichen Alltag begegnen können. Gemeinsam in der Gruppe wählen wir pro Ansatzpunkt entsprechende Techniken und Übungen zur Vertiefung und wenden diese an.

• Wann gerate ich in Stress und was passiert dabei mit mir?
• Welche Ansatzpunkte gibt es, um mit Stress umzugehen oder diesen zu reduzieren?

Fit for research funding
The seminar series aims to familiarize researchers at the University of Cologne with the advisory services offered by Division 7 Research Management in individual workshops. In a total of nine seminars, different aspects of third-party funding acquisition will be presented in more detail. In addition to classic funding lines such as DFG research grants or research units, cross-cutting topics such as gender and research data management, which are becoming increasingly important in the review process, will also be presented.
The seminars will take place every Thursday from 12-1pm during the summer term and will be conducted in English. All dates can be found here.
