THE Ranking: University of Cologne among TOP 150 Universities Worldwide

University of Cologne climbs 25 positions to rank 145 and reaches a new top position since being part of the Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking

According to the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, the University of Cologne (UoC) is among the World’s TOP 150. Out of 1,102 ranked universities, the University of Cologne came in at rank 145. Compared to the previous year, this is an improvement by 25 positions. On the national level, the University of Cologne climbed three positions and is now ranked 15th among the German universities.

Rector Professor Axel Freimuth is pleased with the positive result. He underlines that the UoC was able to improve its rank considerably: “We take this result as an additional indicator for the high quality of research and teaching at our University. It confirms our success in establishing new Collaborative Research Centers and our achievements in the Excellence Initiative. This contributes to our successful profiling efforts and increases the international visibility of our University.”
In four out of five categories the UoC achieved very good results: In Teaching, Research, and Citations the UoC counts among the best 20 percent worldwide. In the category Industry Income the UoC was even placed in the top ten percent. In the fifth category, International Outlook, the UoC is positioned in the best 40 percent.

The THE World University Ranking is one of the most influential higher education rankings, aiming to assess universities according to their main tasks Research, Teaching, Knowledge Transfer, and International Outlook. The results are controlled by an independent audit. In the 2017/18 World Ranking, Times Higher Education evaluated more than 1,000 institutions, making it the most comprehensive international higher education ranking to date.
