Most Important Forum for Classical Archaeology of Mediterranean Cultures to Take Place in Cologne and Bonn

The 19th International Congress of Classical Archaeology will take place from May 22 to 26. This year it is dedicated to the economy of ancient cultures.

The Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica (AIAC) and the Archaeological Institutes of the Universities of Cologne and Bonn are organizing the 19th International Congress for Classical Archaeology. This year’s congress, which takes place only every five years, focuses on the economy in the cultures of antiquity. The aim of the lectures and events is to understand trade and economy as central elements of classical societies. Economic aspects permeated all areas of public and private life in ancient societies, be it in urban planning, religion or art, in living or in death. The congress offers comprehensive insights into the latest scientific findings of Classical Archaeology.

Date of the kick-off event:
22 May 2018, 10.00 a.m.
Martinstrasse 29-37, 50667 Cologne

The congress is the most important exchange forum for all disciplines dealing with Greek-Roman civilization and its neighbouring cultures from the Aegean Bronze Age to the end of Late Antiquity.
The kick-off event on 22 May 2018 will take place in Cologne’s Gürzenich. It will be opened by Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen (Minister for Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia), Henriette Reker (Mayor of Cologne) and Friederike Fless (President of the German Archaeological Institute).
The programme of the congress will cover a total of seven days, four of which will take place in Bonn, and will include an extensive scientific programme with evening events and excursions as well as guided city tours. Around 1,300 guests from 44 countries are expected. Armin Laschet (Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia) is patron of this year’s AIAC Congress.
