Seminar description

At the beginning of your scientific career path, you prepare yourself for research and scientific work as a doctoral candidate, but not for supervising or leading in a scientific setting. The aim of this seminar is to equip you with basic leadership tools in order to be able to instruct and guide graduate assistants (wiss. Hilfskräfte) and technical assistants (TAs) to support you in your project as a doctoral candidate or postdoc. At the same time, you will be provided with input on how to supervise Bachelor and Master students successfully in writing their theses in your role as a supervisor.

Seminar contents

The one-day compact course provides you with the theoretical and practical basics of leadership:

  • Basic model of dyadic leadership, leadership styles
  • Your role as supervisor and (partial) project manager
  • Delegation of tasks
  • Leadership pentagon: understanding, goal setting, trust, control, feedback
  • Techniques of target-oriented conversation

Seminar methods

This course follows a process-oriented approach and will continually address the participants’ individual questions in single work and group discussions, exercises and reflection units. Interactive and inclusive methods will be used so that participants can optimally apply the skills learnt to their daily work at the university. Theoretical segments will be recapitulated in the form of short summaries and checklists for the participants to increase the depth of learning.
