Measure 7
Gender
The University of Cologne actively promotes equal opportunities of women and men. To this end, we have launched five key programs and promote gender-related research activities, for example at the Gender Studies in Cologne Center (GeStiK).
UoC Gender Management Program
In the target and performance agreements between the Rectorate and the Faculties, the involved parties agree on specific goals regarding the promotion of gender equality at the University of Cologne. These goals include strengthening and supporting the decentral gender commissioners of the Faculties, fulfilling the women’s quota in the appointment of professors, integrating gender into teaching, and developing individual measures for each Faculty. The fulfilment of these requirements is tied to the provision of additional funding. The contact person is Dr. Britt Dahmen.
Gender-oriented Recruitment Schemes
To increase the number of women in leadership positions, the University actively promotes the recruitment of outstanding female early-stage researchers and professors. To achieve this, the UoC has developed the “Quality Assurance in Appointment Procedures” training program for members of professors appointment commissions. We are currently developing a best-practice model for a new gender-sensitive recruitment procedure, and models for innovative active recruitment procedures are being tested. For more information, please contact Dr.Britt Dahmen.
Undergraduate and Graduate Mentoring Programs
The UoC actively scouts its large pool of undergraduate and graduate students for exceptional female students who have demonstrated excellent academic potential. These outstanding individuals receive additional mentoring and training (Gender Mentoring Agency). For more information, please contact Ms. Katrin Pieper.
Job-Sharing Program for Persons in Leadership Positions
The UoC has implemented a job-sharing program for women and men in leadership positions which is available for all career levels. For more information, please contact Dr.Britt Dahmen.
Supporting the Compatibility of Family and Career
In order to allow parents to attend special events or fulfil obligations outside the regular opening hours of childcare facilities, the University of Cologne has established a childcare backup service on the premises of its childcare center. For more information, please contact Ms. Anke Jonatzke.
Furthermore, the University supports women who want to return to their academic careers after several months’ parental or caregiver leave. To this end, the UoC has created four re-entry positions for female doctoral candidates and post-docs. Further information is available here.
