This lecture will begin with a brief overview of the foundational critique of anthropocentrism, and the articulation of alternative ethical perspectives, as this was advanced in the fields of environmental philosophy, ethics and religious studies from the 1970s. Turning to contemporary debates and discussions, we will then consider proposals and practices for cultivating an ecological ethos within the new transdisciplinary field of the environmental humanities, focusing in particular on multispecies approaches to questions of environmental justice, collective wellbeing and disaster preparedness.
