The rector is elected by the University Council for an initial term of at least six years, which may be followed by further terms of at least four years. The rector is chairman of the Rectorate and the Senate.

Liaison Lecturer for Student Discrimination Issues

Every Faculty has named a liaison lecturer. There is also a central liaison lecturer. The liaison lecturers can be contacted in all cases of discrimination – on the basis of color, ethnic background, religion, gender, age and sexual orientation.

The chancellor is head of the university administration. He/she is responsible for the budget and represents the university’s interests in the planning and implementation of construction projects.

Gender Equality Officer

The Gender Equality Officer promotes the interests of women at the university and thus seeks to counteract forms of structural, gender-related discrimination. Another aim is to improve the individual situation of women at the university.

Constitution of the University of Cologne

Pursuant to Section 2(4) sent. 1 and Section 22(1) sent. 1 no. 3 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG) as amended by the Higher Education Autonomy Act (Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz – HFG) on 31 October 2006 (GV.NRW, p. 477), the University of Cologne has adopted a new Constitution as its charter (as at 10 January 2018).
