Professor Mansel studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg, Geneva, and Munich, where he passed both state examinations. He did his doctorate in Munich and his Habilitation at the University of Heidelberg. Since 1999 he has been a professor for civil law, international private law, comparative law, and civil procedural law. He is also the director of the Institute for International and Foreign Private Law at the University of Cologne. He turned down offers form the Universities of Regensburg, Düsseldorf, and Munich.

Professor Mansel is a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Académie de droit comparé (Paris), the Società Italiana degli Studiosi del Diritto Civile, the European Law Institute, the Council of the German Society for International Law. He is president of the German Council for Private International Law, chairman of the Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law, Hamburg, and vice-chairman of the committee for the awarding of research prizes of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (as well as for the awarding of the Sofja Kovalevskaja Prizes).
From 2008 to 2010 he was spokesman of the Review Board, and between 2010 and 2011 he was deputy spokesman of the Review Board Legal Studies of the German Research Foundation – DFG.

From 2008 to 2017 he was a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the University of Cologne.

He has held guest professorships at the School of Law, Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley, and the Faculty of Law of the University of Wuhan, China, and taught at the Hague Academy of International Law.

Professor Mansel is founding commissioner for the bi-national degree programmes at the UoC’s Faculty of Law with universities in Istanbul and the University of Florence.
