Gudrun Gersmann was born in 1960. She studied history, Romance philology and German in Bochum, Geneva and Paris. In 1991, she attained her doctorate at Ruhr University Bochum with a study on censorship and underground bookselling in Paris in the late eighteenth century. In 1997, she received the Literaturpreis of the Gleimhaus in Halberstadt for her dissertation. 

After working as an academic assistant in Bochum, she received a three-year Lise Meitner habilitation scholarship of the state of North-Rhine Westphalia. In 2000, she completed her habilitation at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich with a study on ordeal by water and witch trials in the Prince-Bishopric of Münster in the early modern period. 

Since 1998, she headed the Munich branches of the online projects “Aufbau des Servers Frühe Neuzeit”, “magi-e” and “sehepunkte”, which were funded by the German Research Foundation, at LMU Munich. The projects were organized in cooperation with the Bavarian State Library.

In early 2002, Gudrun Gersmann became a professor for the history of the early modern period at RWTH Aachen, which also involved heading the university archive. 

In 2004, Professor Gersmann succeeded Professor Johannes Kunisch as Chair for the History of the Early Modern Period at the University of Cologne.  She headed the German Historical Institute Paris from 2007 to 2012, after which time she returned to her position in Cologne.

From October 2013 to March 2015, Gudrun Gersmann served as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, where she was responsible for planning and academic careers. Since April 2015, she is the University of Cologne’s Prorector for International Affairs.
