Manuela Günter majored in contemporary German literature, philosophy, sociology and history at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, where she obtained her doctorate in 1995.

Until 1997, she was a research assistant in a project at LMU funded by the German Research Foundation – DFG. Until 2001, she was a research assistant at the Institute for German Language and Literature I of the University of Cologne.

In 2001, Manuela Günter was appointed academic counsellor. In 2003, she received the Lise Meitner Habilitation Scholarship of the state of North Rhine Westphalia. In 2007, she received the Venia Legendi for Contemporary German Literature. Among other things, her research focuses on gender studies, migration literature as well as Holocaust literature.

Manuela Günter was appointed as an adjunct professor in 2011. Already in 2000, she was a member of the Gender Equality Committee, and from 2013 to 2015 she was the Gender Equality Officer of the University of Cologne’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
