About the Person
Avram Noam Chomsky, born 1928 in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, USA), became Professor of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1961 and has been teaching there ever since. Chomsky is considered one of the most outstanding intellectuals of our time and his work as well as his public interventions have received international acclaim and reception, as well as criticism. He has revolutionized language research with his work on linguistics and the philosophy of language; his ideas have a paradigmatic relevance. He is also known for his dedication to political affairs and his criticism of the politics of the USA.
The fact that we have been able to welcome Noam Chomsky this year as the Albertus-Magnus-Professor after Arthur C. Danto (2005) and Jean-Luc Nancy (2006) as well as Giorgio Agamben (2007), Robert Audi (2008), Philipp Pettit (2009) and Enrique Dussel (2010), demonstrates the prestige given this professorship named after the founding father and clandestine patron of our university.
