150 Years of German-Japanese Relations
The University of Cologne to host a German-Japanese Symposium
2011 is the year of German-Japanese relations, because the first friendship and trade agreements between Japan and the then Prussia came into place 150 years ago. Bringing partners together, strengthening existing connections and establishing even more ties are still objectives of both countries 150 years later. Due to this and in honour of the 150-year anniversary, there will be a German-Japanese symposium taking place at the University of Cologne from 8th – 10th September, 2011.
The symposium entitled “Dynamics of Traditional Research Societies in a Rapidly Changing World“ will see a gathering of academics and representatives from 14 Japanese partner universities together with their German colleagues to discuss the dynamics of traditional research societies in a rapidly changing world. The conference is being organized by the International Office of the University of Cologne and the Japan Foundation Cologne with the support of a number of Japanese universities. “The focus of the symposium is questions and topics relevant for both Japan and Germany as well as international academic cooperation,” says Prof. Kazuaki Tezuka, director of the Japan Foundation.
In addition to numerous workshops and talks, the roundtable discussion on the second day will be one of the first highlights of the symposium. High-ranking representatives from the DAAD, the DFG, the Japan Foundation and the University of Cologne as well as diplomats from both countries will discuss perspectives of Japanese-German research cooperation in a globalized world there. Not only the present bilateral relations will be discussed, but also the establishment of future projects and events in areas including science, education, economics and politics.
The three-day event will also have a cultural programme. A further highlight and a fitting closing for the event will be a concert by the Gagaku Ensemble from the Tenri University of Nara. Non-participants and the public are also cordially invited to this as well as the roundtable event.
