The New York office of the University of Cologne has played a pivotal role in expanding my professional network and broadening my horizons. During my time as an intern in New York, I got in touch with the New York office of the University of Cologne, and through their efforts, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a visit to the Deutsche Bundesbank, a highlight that enriched my understanding of finance. In addition, I was introduced to the University of Cologne's remarkable summer school program, which reinforced my decision to pursue my Masters at the University of Cologne because of the many international opportunities it offered. This experience facilitated my initial connections with students from Cologne and set the start for a network in the new city. I am immensely grateful for the role the New York Office has played in shaping my path and fostering my global academic aspirations.

The New York Office is an invaluable asset to the University of Cologne. The events which we hosted together in New York and Washington, D.C. exemplified how important and helpful such a liaison office is specifically in North America. Due to the office’s immense network of high-level contacts, we could present our research to a highly interested and diverse audience, including experts from my own area of expertise, political stakeholders, and important contacts in the research funding landscape. Thanks to the office we could easily forge new contacts in the U.S. for future transatlantic collaborations, while at the same time showcasing the fruitful cooperation of our current project. The outreach was remarkable, for our U.S. network as well as for the UoC back in Germany, as I got to witness myself: Not only were my colleagues and I approached at the Society for Neuroscience Conference in Washington, D.C. about our event organized in New York by the UoC NY Office, but I was also contacted by an early career scientist from Columbia University who attended that event and now wants to return to Germany. Conversations between her and the UoC are now in progress. I was also particularly grateful for the opportunity to speak directly with DFG North America’s Program Director as well as with the Director Science and Technology of the German Embassy. These exchanges will be helpful not only for my current project with the C3NS network, but also for potential future UoC projects which can benefit from transnational funding and networks. Thank you Dr. Bosbach and the New York Office for organizing these excellent and productive events for us and for being a champion of our university in the US and Canada!

I am deeply grateful for the hard work of Dr. Eva Bosbach and her team in arranging the two meetings that allowed my colleagues and me to showcase the exciting collaborative work we have been doing. The panel allowed the collaborators on our interdisciplinary, transnational project, funded in part by the NSF and the DFG, to provide the general public an understanding of the ways in which collaborations between neuroscientists and engineers are leading to deeper insights into how nervous systems control complex, adaptive behavior, and how this knowledge can advance the state of the art in robotics. I was particularly grateful that Dr. Bosbach and her team spent considerable time arranging for me to participate remotely, because I could unfortunately not attend in person. Thanks to their hard work, I was able to fully participate in the panel discussion. The work that Dr. Bosbach and her team are doing is very important for fostering international, interdisciplinary work and sharing its results with a broader public.

One high-scale, very well attended expert panel discussion “Live Long and Prosper: Aging Research in Academia and Industry” that the UoC NY Office organized together with the GCRI NY at the German House, and a talk for students at the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at the City College of New York. Both events were excellently organized and managed by Ms. Bosbach from the UoC New York Office.

Moderating the panel on "Democracy and Education in the Age of Renascent Nationalism" at German House in New York this March was a memorable and significant experience for me. The day before, it became clear that the pandemic had reached the city, and Dr. Eva Bosbach and her team at the University of Cologne's New York office quickly pivoted, transforming what had been intended as an event before a large audience into an interactive livestream. As a result, the panelists, including academics and the head of Germany's office of civilization, were still able to exchange ideas, debate, and answer questions from the audience. The discussion was doubly meaningful—it was both a timely exploration of democracy and education and an example of how to sustain an academic community even in difficult times.

Thanks to her incredible organizational skills and her successful effort to recruit multiple partners including the German Embassy in Washington D.C. and the DFG North America, we were able to truly engage in a transatlantic discussion about history and memory, political demands and forms of protest, racial profiling and racism and many other issues relevant to our time.

The virtual event “Sustainable Megacities” with the University of Cologne New York Office and the DWIH NY was excellently prepared, extremely motivating and attended by numerous very interested listeners. In the aftermath, several very interesting new international contacts have already developed. The refreshing format suggested by the organizers – to present 3 key images from our research findings – was a perfect conversation starter that allowed the audience to relate straight to the content and participate interactively. This innovative format will be useful for us in the future as well, as we will adopt it and use it in lectures. Once again, the successful event demonstrated how important meetings and exchanges through lectures and workshops with discussions are and remain – with digital channels and our New York Office making great contributions.

This Transatlantic Tandem Talk of the NY Office is a testament for the importance of international cooperation in research in CEPLAS and the University of Cologne, as it was firstly in the “Transatlantic Workshop” on plant sciences organized by the UoC NY Office at the German House in New York in 2017. Subsequently, a delegation of graduate students from WSU attended the first International CEPLAS Summer School near Cologne. Now with the new digital opportunities, I am glad to have participated in this initiative of the Transatlantic Tandem Talks and in an upcoming exciting virtual seminar between the two universities we are planning as a result.

I greatly enjoyed my participation in the Transatlantic Tandem Talk, together with my dear colleague Prof. Terry McCabe of Boulder, Colorado, exploring the links between climate change adaptation and conservation strategies. Together with Dr. Eva Bosbach we identified this topic as most pertinent and of public concern. At the same time both climate change and conservation are crucial to our joint work in ecological anthropology in the savannas of eastern and southern Africa. The Tandem Talk was impressively organized, and the moderation afterwards was excellent. What an ideal circumstance to address public interest in the subject. The debate after our talk was exceedingly lively and could have easily carried on for another hour. I am very glad that this opportunity exists to further US American-German cooperation on pertinent global challenges.

To go on this adventure to a vibrant city like New York City has always been a dream of mine, but I could never have imagined just how great this internship opportunity would be for me.

The activities of the University of Cologne New York Office I supported were always insightful and inspiring. I feel very lucky to have experienced the many exciting events of the German House and in New York City. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Bosbach for the opportunities offered to me to strengthen my skill set and acquire new knowledge in the fields of transatlantic exchange, science diplomacy, and the North American higher education landscape. It was an honor to join the delegation led by Rector Prof. Axel Freimuth to celebrate the University of Cologne New York Office’s 10th anniversary in Washington D.C. and NYC. The panel discussion “Transatlantic Perspectives on Quantum Science and Technologies” highlighted the work of our research cluster of excellence ML4Q and its partner institutions in Germany and the U.S. I appreciate the opportunity to deepen our collaborations and connect with new experts and organizations. I very much enjoyed introducing the interested audiences in both cities to the complexities of phenomena in quantum mechanics and new technologies. We emphasized the need for transatlantic efforts to tackle the development of this new technology and to train new generations of scientists willing to “play” with the many exciting phenomena of the quantum realm. Everything was perfectly organized and a great pleasure to take part in.
