Gender Arrangement at the University of Cologne

Women at all levels of UoC are quite well represented compared to other universities in Northrhine-Westfalia (see Gender-Report 2010). However, the national ranking of universities with respect to gender exposes some deficiencies (see CEWS 2011). In 2011 58% of the students were female, 48% of the PhD-graduates in 2010 were women. With respect to habilitations the percentage of women rose from 8% in 1990 to 30% in 2011. This trend can also be seen for the percentage of female professors: while in 1990 only 5% of the professorships were taken over by women, in 2010 their participation had risen to 21%. Indeed it is obvious that most women leave the scientific career path after their PhD-degree. Hence one focus of gender equality policies and activities lies in the advancement of women at post-doc-level as well as in the appointment of female professors. The statistics show as well that there is a strong need of differentiation of gender equality measures between the faculties and the cultures of disciplines.
