Academic Writing in English in the Natural and Life Sciences

This is a practical workshop focussed on helping researchers on their journey to publication. After
attending this course, participants will feel more confident in structuring their academic texts as well as
being aware of typical mistakes in academic writing and how to fix them.

This one and a half day workshop is ideal for those Doctoral candidates and Postdocs who already have experience in writing in English but are not native speakers of English. The course addresses the main challenges in writing an academic text for publication and offers tips and techniques to help you write more clearly.
As the second day focuses on participants’ writing they are asked to bring a current writing project to the workshop. In addition, they should bring a copy of a native speaker paper from  the Natural and Life Sciences area.

Day 1:
• The writing process
• General style and structure of academic papers, paragraphs and sentences in  the Natural and Life Sciences
• Punctuation
• Academic vocabulary - words and phrases used to structure papers and improve the written style
• Learning from native speakers
• Abstracts

Day 2
• Classic Mistakes
• Improving Texts - writing and feedback on your own work
• Reflections and next steps

We have a facilitative style and we encourage lots of discussion and input by the participants. Our belief is if people are relaxed and enjoying the workshop they will contribute and learn more.

Lesley-Anne Weiling

Lesley-Anne Weiling, is a native English speaker from Ireland and holds a degree in Modern History from Queens University Belfast. Over the last 10 years, she has supported numerous doctoral candidates, postdocs and senior researchers on their journey to publication.  In addition to teaching academic writing and academic presentation skills, she edits academic texts and holds regular classes at the university in conversational English.  She aims to not only demystify academic writing, but to help researchers communicate more effectively in all aspects of their academic career.
