Establishment of an Institute for International Peace and Security Law at the University of Cologne
Renowned International Lawyer Claus Kreß Declines Call of the Max Planck Society and will become Director of the new Institute
The internationally renowned law professor, Claus Kreß, will build at the University of Cologne an institute for international peace and security Law. This institute is to comprehensively cover the ius contra bellum (the international law on the use of force), the ius in bello (the international law of armed conflicts) and the ius post bellum (the international legal rules governing the transition to and the consolidation of peace after an armed conflict). Special attention will be given to the emerging international criminal justice system, to whose recent development Professor Kreß has contributed in numerous national and international functions.
The institute is to work with leading foreign research institutes and will closely follow the practice of international peace and security law through a continuous exchange of knowledge with relevant public authorities, international organizations and non-governmental organisations. The overall idea is to set up a centre of competence that will bundle all relevant public international law aspects of the large theme of “War and Peace”.
The Rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Axel Freimuth, stated: “We are proud that we are able to keep Professor Kreß at the University. The new institute is fully in line with and further strengthens the international profile of our University.” The University came out on top of the Max Planck Society, which offered Prof. Dr. Kreß a director’s post at its new international institute in Luxembourg.
Cologne law students are also reacting positively to the decision. The Faculty’s teaching prize was already conferred upon Prof. Dr. Kreß twice. Moreover, with over 1000 signatures, students spontaneously initiated a petition for their professor to stay.
