Non-University Research Institutions Cooperating with the University
The University of Cologne cooperates with numerous large-scale research establishments based in the region. Extensive collaborations exist with the following institutions:
- German Aerospace Center (DLR)
- German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE)
- center of advanced european studies and research – caesar
- Research Centre Jülich
- Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI)
- Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences
- Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing
- Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies
- Max Planck Institute for Neurological Research
- Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy
- Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research
- Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods
The BioRiver Science Initiative was launched in collaboration with the Universities of Bonn and Düsseldorf and the Research Centre Jülich. The Initiative bundles the region’s biomedical research activities, thus upgrading this highly innovative economic and research location in the Rhineland. Given the cost-intensive nature of their research activities, the institutions involved are enabled to focus on their own particular fields of expertise.Another main feature of the cooperation arrangements is that they strive to integrate students in the research projects.
The geo-alliance ABC/J-Geoverbund (ABC/J standing for Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Jülich) was founded in the summer of 2009 as a network with the Research Centre Jülich. Its partners of equal standing are the RWTH Aachen University and the Universities of Bonn and Cologne. The alliance links up the extensive know-how amassed in the regional research establishments, particularly in the geo-sciences and geography.
Strategies for even closer cooperation have been devised with the help of external assessments, the aim being to promote collaboration in teaching and research as well as in joint projects – for example, under the Excellence Initiative.
