University Prize

The University of Cologne, with the generous backing of its alumni network Köln Alumni - Verein der Freunde und Förderer, will be awarding the University Prize in appreciation of outstanding academic projects or achievements completed within the University.

Schmittmann- Wahlen Scholarship

In remembrance of the Cologne University professor Dr. Benedikt Schmittmann (1872-1939), Cologne University in tandem with the “Benedikt und Helene Schmittmann-Wahlen Foundation” annually awards a doctoral scholarship. The scholarship is presented by the Rector of the University at the ceremonial opening of the winter semester.

Albertus Magnus Professorship

The Albertus Magnus Professorship was established at Cologne University in commemoration of the medieval universal scholar Albertus Magnus (1193-1280), who from 1248 until 1254 headed the studia generalia of the Dominican Order in Cologne, counting also Thomas Aquinas among his pupils.

The appointment to this professorship goes to a personage of international renown who in public lectures and seminars addresses topical issues that play a general role in many fundamental sciences, but also in public debate. Albertus Magnus is considered one of the spiritual fathers of the University, founded in 1388.

Meister-Eckhart-Prize

The Meister Eckhart Prize is named after the preacher, prior and professor who lived between 1260 and 1328. Eckhart von Hochheim, commonly known as Meister (“Master”) Eckhart, taught above all in Erfurt, Cologne, Paris and Strasbourg.
The Meister Eckhart Prize, endowed with 50,000 euros, has been awarded biennially since 2001. It was first offered by the Düsseldorf Identity Foundation (a non-profit philosophy institution) to foster dialogue on the subject of identity within the opinion-forming public. The honour is conferred upon personages who dedicate their work to existential questions of personal, social and intercultural identity, and who through their actions invigorate a broad public and international discourse.

Since 2007, the Meister Eckhart Prize has been bestowed together with the University of Cologne.
