Success in the Excellence Competition
The University of Cologne has every reason to be pleased: five of its projects have reached the final round of competition among Germany’s best universities under the Excellence Initiative.
Overall Concept
With its proposal “Meeting the Challenge of Change and Complexity” (Die Herausforderung von Wandel und Komplexität annehmen), the University of Cologne aims to further strengthen innovative research fields by adopting a bundle of measures. In doing so, it will focus special attention on the creation of excellent working conditions for young researchers. A further goal is to boost successful collaborations with other research institutions in the region.
Graduate School
Application of the Arts and Humanities Faculty: a.r.t.e.s. Research School – Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Arts and Humanities Cologne (Speaker: Prof. Dr. Andreas Speer)
Cluster of Excellence
Application of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty: CEPLAS – Cluster of Excellence in the Field of Plant Science (Speaker: Prof. Dr. Marcel Bucher)
The project is to be carried out in close cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre in Jülich, the nearby Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research and Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf.
Promotion at the University
The University has also submitted two proposals, which are already promoted:
Altogether, Cologne University has submitted seven new draft proposals. Besides its application under the Institutional Strategy to strengthen the University as a whole, it has presented three proposals each for the promotion of Graduate Schools and Clusters of Excellence.
