Rector
The Rector is elected by the University Council for an initial term of at least six years, which may be followed by further terms of at least four years. The Rector is chairman of the Rectorate and the Senate.

The Rectorate is responsible for the governance and management of the University. It currently comprises the Rector as chairman, four Pro-Rectors and the Chancellor.

Committees
Many of the University’s tasks are performed by committees. In large part, these committees are mandatory under the University’s Basic Order; in part, they are prescribed by law.
Chancellor
The Chancellor is head of the University Administration. He/she is responsible for the budget and represents the University’s interests in planning and constructing university buildings.

Gender Equality Officer
The Gender Equality Officer looks after the interests of women at the University and thus seeks to counteract forms of structural, gender-related discrimination. A simultaneous aim is to improve the individual situation of women at the University.

University of Cologne Canon
Pursuant to Section 2(4) sent. 1 and Section 22(1) sent. 1 no. 3 of the Law governing universities of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG) as amended by the Autonomy of Universities Act (Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz – HFG) on 31 October 2006 (GV.NRW, p. 477), the University of Cologne has adopted a new Basic Order as its charter (as at 25 June 2007).
