Gender Equality and Diversity at the University of Cologne

The University of Cologne campaigns actively for diversity, multiplicity of perspectives, and gender equality. This is anchored in its ‘Gender Equality and Diversity’ mission statement. Strategies, concepts, structures, and measures for administration, research, and teaching are in place in order to increase diversity, raise awareness towards gender (in)equality, and eliminate discrimination. 

In 2014, the University of Cologne was awarded the Total E-Quality distinction for the third time for its outstanding work in the area of gender equality. Moreover, its Gender Equality Concept 2015–2019 (PDF) within the Female Professors Programme II was highlighted as an excellent concept. As one of the University’s seven core excellence measures, gender equality is firmly anchored in the Institutional Strategy of the University of Cologne 2012–2017. In the framework of the target and performance agreements  with the Faculties, the University has defined specific gender equality goals and financially rewards their implementation.

In addition, the University of Cologne has built up a wide range of structures and measures in the areas of inclusion, educational equity, and anti-discrimination, which are now being interlinked and consolidated through an overarching strategy development process in the framework of the Shaping Diversity audit (2017/2018).

The University of Cologne and RWTH Aachen University are underscoring their close partnership through joint Gender Equality Guidelines (PDF).
