Health insurance

A proof of health insurance coverage from a German statutory health insurer or an exemption certificate ("Befreiungsbescheinigung") from a German statutory health insurer (in the event that you are insured in your home country or have a private (German) health insurance policy) is a requirement for being enrolled at the University of Cologne.

The costs for a student´s health insurance are of appr. 80 € per month, depending on the health insurance company.

EU/EEA citizens or citizens from countries having a Social Security Agreement with Germany:
Usually, the health insurance coverage from EU/EEA-countries is sufficient for enrolment at a German university. Please bring your EHIC card from your home country and ask a German statutory health insurer to issue an exemption certificate ("Befreiungsbescheinigung") for enrolment at a German university. An additional health insurance coverage is not necessary.

EU/EEA citizens or citizens from countries not having a Social Security Agreement with Germany:
If you have a health insurance coverage from your home country or a private German health insurance please consult a German statutory health insurer whether the coverage is sufficient for enrolment at university and if yes, ask them to issue an exemption certificate ("Befreiungsbescheinigung"). If this is not possible you have to obtain a German statutory health insurance for enrolment at a German university. By the way, for the application of a residence permit non-EU/EAA citizens have to hand in a health insurance policy as well.

Exception: Students reaching the age of 30, from the 14th study semester on and participants of the preparatory German language course are not able to buy a German statutory health insurance - they have to obtain a private (German) health insurance.
